Yesterday was my birthday and I got a piece of gaming goodness, a Nintendo 3DS! I had debated buying one for myself but decided to wait and boy am I glad I did, its nice to get one for free! I got the aqua blue model, its a very handsome device. My initial thoughts are the 3D will be turned off the majority of the time but switching it off and then back on a few minutes later makes a great impression, its super cool to see the 3D effect in action. I have read that others thought the 3D slider should be adjusted to the lowest setting and I agree. The included software is really cool, for example I think Face Raiders is a very entertaining game. Taking your picture and watching the software make faces with your face is lots of fun. Augmented reality is definitely a cool part of the 3DS experience and I am enjoying it.

I bought Pilot Wings Resort and I love the game. I enjoyed flying the plane around Wuhu Island in Wii Sports Resort title and this is basically the same thing except you get to use a hang glider and a jetpack as well. I plan on getting the 3D remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time the day it comes out. Ocarina of Time is one of my all time favorite games. I can tell this system is going to be something special.

Unfortunate too I had been waiting for this game for a while. All of the game selection screens are missing graphics like this:

In between the two characters should be the menu options. You can blindly pick something and it will eventually get you to this screen:

There should be a full world map in the background and that is missing. From here you can select Mexico and the next screen appears that it is missing info as well, its not clear what you need to do to start the game. I think this issue exposes one of the major problems with iPhone gaming; In a rush to get the product out the door games are not thoroughly tested. Tapper is the only game to suffer this fate either and if you hit the App Store on your iPhone regularly you will see updates to games all the time. The update model is neat but companies really need to spend more time testing and perfecting their games.

I think portable gaming on phones has a lot of potential but these devices will never replace my tried and true console systems.

So Mass Effect 2 arrived a week or so ago. I was so ready to get playing but the first thing I needed to do was to transfer my old Mass Effect 1 saved game to my new console. See, I got caught up in buying the latest and greatest 360 since it was supposed to be quiet compared to the original (plus it has HDMI which my first gen 360 doesn’t have). At the time when I purchased it the transfer cable was not available. Fast forward to last week and I got the cable. Only problem is I forgot one little issue. When I tried to configure my Xbox Live account on my new 360 I couldn’t get it logged in. I tried resetting my password to no avail; ultimately I had to create a new account. No big deal right?

So I proceeded to copy my saved game from my old 360 to the new. Then I powered up Mass Effect 1 and went to load my game. The saved game was no longer there! The transfer kit saw saved files for ME1 but it apparently didn’t transfer properly. So I figure I might as well just connect my old 360 and play it on that. No go there! The transfer kit removed the old copy essentially blanking the HDD. So after who knows how many hours I have to start over from the beginning.

Why play Mass Effect 1 all over again? Well your character transfers from ME1 to ME2 and any experience points and story arcs explored in the first game transfer to the second. Apparently there are also a few extras for people who played the first one and have imported their characters that is not offered to new players on ME2. Disappointing a bit but ultimately Mass Effect is worth playing again. I played it last in 2008 so this will be a great refresher. So far I am about 11 hours into my playthrough, have rescued Liara and now I am headed to Feros. What a fun game!

On another note, I’m not surprised the copy didn’t work. Since I have a different Gamertag on the new 360 it won’t load the file because its tied to my old one.

I LOVED Mass Effect 1 for the 360. It has all the makings of an epic and timeless tale so when Mass Effect 2 was announced I knew I had to pick it up. I bought it for the PC not too long ago and now I’m finally getting ready to start playing. My only concern is whether or not I should have purchased it for the 360 instead since you can import your character. After doing some research I have determined that I need to buy it for the 360 because there are quite a few things you could miss by not importing your character. I’m not one that likes to miss out on anything story related so I guess I will be buying the 360 version. Good thing I am off work today, off I go to the local Best Buy!
