I’ve had some time to tear down the NBA and found a few parts that were broken or missing. First I knew when I got the game it was missing a round target, a plastic piece with a basketball player on it (Defender plastic) and a rebound rubber bracket. I posted on the newsgroups that I was looking for these parts and ended up finding the defender plastic and the bracket for $28 as seen above.

Later on during more dis assembly I found that the middle ramp was cracked very badly:

I went searching and found out that Pinball Spare Parts Australia had the middle ramp plus a few other goodies I wanted. It was expensive to ship via air from Australia so I went ahead and purchased a few more parts like some plastic pieces that I found were broken and another defender plastic since they break easily. I wish I found the defender plastic here first since this was only $6 (the other one was $15!!).

I ended up doing some board work on the CPU board on this game. I ended up replacing the battery holder, installing a few sockets and SIP strips for three ICs that were dead and the ICs themselves.

Here is where I am now at price wise:

Project Start: $800

Parts to repair CPU board:
Battery Holder - $4.95
Sockets – $.80
SIP Strip – $.35
ICs – $1.70

Parts Purchased from another hobbiest:
Defender Plastic – $15
Rebound Rubber Bracket – $18

Parts Purchased from Pinball Spare Parts Australia:
Defender Plastic – $6
Playfield Plastic – $4.05
Misc Clear Playfield Plastic – $3.95
Backbox Clear Plastics – $29.95
Center Ramp Assembly – $39.95

Total Project Cost as of this post: $924.70

On another note I will be putting up a separate, detailed blog post detailing the actual work I did to this game at the end of the job. For the time being feel free to peruse the pictures in my restoration gallery for this game here to get an idea of what is going on.

I am not a huge fan of most mods but I do like to customize my games a little bit. Transformers is begging for mods and my first ones are very tame compared to what I have running around in my head First off I decided to install one of Pinbit’s red DMD display covers. This changes the color of the DMD from orange to red:

Before - DMD Is Orange

And After - RED Rocks!

I also installed a shooter rod with a Translucent red color:

This looks better than the stock black shooter rod.

And finally the cabinet had a blue flipper button on the left side and a red flipper button on the right side. I replaced both of these with translucent versions:

Ahhh, much better

Unfortunately purple translucent buttons are not available

Over the years I’ve brought my share of games back from the dead; games with issues ranging from being completely inoperable to being partial part outs. What you always have...

Over the years I’ve brought my share of games back from the dead; games with issues ranging from being completely inoperable to being partial part outs. What you always have to take into account when rebuilding a dead game is how much it’s going to cost to get the game back and running and if it is financially worth doing so, if your intention is to sell the game afterwards. Another consideration is what do you hope to get out of the process? Profit? Fame? Satisfaction? Everyone’s goal is different, my goal when rebuilding a dead game is to at least break even financially but most important of all is to take a forgotten game and make it playable again.

The positive side of buying a dead game is they are usually cheaper, at least at first appearance. Many times you will find there can be many hidden costs that can turn your low priced project into a high dollar money vacuum. I normally don’t speak publicly about what I pay for projects or what I pay to return them back to service but I think this would be an excellent topic for someone new to the hobby or for someone who has never rescued and resurrected a game before. I have the perfect project to showcase what goes into a pinball machine rebuild, my recent acquisition, an NBA Fastbreak project.

I bought this project this past year and picked it up at the York pinball show in early October. A friend of mine in West Virginia bought it in a partially working state from someone who I assume was an operator. This game stands as a great example of what the common operator would do with a machine that is no longer earning; parts needed for other games that are in operation and earning money are removed and used. These games sit waiting patiently for more parts robberies to occur, or even a complete part out! My friend “rescued” this game and offered it up to me for sale. I have had NBA Fastbreak in the past and enjoyed the game enough to take on this project. In future posts I will be documenting the process I have gone through to restore this game and most importantly what I paid for the base game plus all needed restoration parts to provide a real world example of what it costs.

First I want to show you the initial pictures I was sent of the game. I was given a good description; the game was missing a few random parts and booted up to a ground fault row 1 error. I was offered it for $750. Initial calculations showed that after some boardwork, replacing the missing parts and installing common rebuild parts I theoretically would be at a rough total cost of $950. This seemed like a fair price since the boardset alone could sell for $500 to $600 if I were to part the game out. I would have to pay another $50 to have it delivered to the York pinball show bringing the initial total cost to $800. Since all of the major parts were there I took the gamble and bought the game.

In my next post I will start to outline what I have found since I got the game and what all of the individual parts needed will cost. For purposes of accuracy I am going to omit any shipping costs for a couple of reasons: 1.) I bundle my purchases to save on shipping with parts I need for other games and 2.) shipping varies from location to location. You will want to assume a little bit of overhead for shipping costs. Also take into consideration that I am not going to put any monetary value on my time or experience, this is purely from a parts and game cost perspective. I take a while to work on a game so it would be difficult to get an actual time calculation although I will do my best within these posts to document the time spent on repairing and restoring this game.

Total cost as of this post: $800.

I uploaded this video to YouTube on the 22nd of December. It shows almost an hour of gameplay from version 1.0 of the software which is what the game shipped with. I did this with my old DV camcorder which desperately needs to be replaced!

There is really nothing impressive in this video gameplay wise but will give you an idea of just how punishing this game is!

It’s here! I know I haven’t done a very good job about keeping this a secret within my posts but what can you say, I’m not very good with secrets! Ever since I got into the pinball hobby 8 or so years ago I always wanted a Transformers themed pinball machine. First, lets start with a little history. Over the years every once and a while someone on the Rec.Games.Pinball newsgroup would post a thread asking everyone what their dream pinball theme is and, of course, my reply was Transformers. Eventually the unthinkable happened, rumors started circulating that Stern might make a Transformers pinball. Many speculated whether Stern would go with the cartoon or the movies for inspiration. My favorite incarnation of the robots in disguise is definitely the 80′s cartoon and movie, but since Stern likes to release games based on recent licenses it wouldn’t be a surprise if they went with the new movies for inspiration. All in all that would be fine with me, after all, Transformers in pinball form would rock!

In August of 2011 Stern released a Transformers promotional video. Was I dreaming? It not only confirmed Transformers as a title but it showcased some of Stern’s new marketing tactics. Up to this point Stern’s marketing was pretty much non-existent but no longer. It was a nice change of pace and what theme would transform their image better than Transformers?

In September 2011 the first official pictures were posted! I knew that I wanted this to be my very first brand new game, after 13 years in the arcade game hobby it was about time to take the plunge and go where I have never gone before. The downside to the timing of the announcement was I didn’t have the cash to pay for it unless I made a lot of sacrifices. I just bought Creature from the Black Lagoon which I really loved but in the end it had to go so I could gather the funds necessary to buy Transformers along with my Centipede, Joust, Ms Pacman and other unrelated objects I have collected over the years.

Those not in the know might be asking why I didn’t just save money and buy one down the road. Stern’s current policies have forced collectors into a buy it now or don’t buy it at all/buy it at a super inflated price position. I will expand on this in a later post but for now let’s just say I saved a ton of cash pre-ordering the game versus waiting and at the same time guaranteed myself a game. Normally I wouldn’t have fallen into this trap but this title is one I knew I had to have brand new. It is important to note that even though the limited edition games are run at once and never again the Pro version of Stern’s games can be re-run as the demand arises. Stern is only making 500 Limited Edition models and 125 Special Limited Edition models. The special edition LEs are minor art differences only, not enough to fork over another $600.

Once I got my cash together and chose a distributor the wait was on. I sent payment for my game back on November the 1st and proceeded to wait until Stern was done finishing up the details of the limited edition games. Up until this point all I saw were pictures of the stripped down pro version of the game so this was truly a blind purchase. Luckily for me in the end I am *mostly* satisfied with what the final game turned out to be. I will expand on this later on in this post.

After what seemed like forever I finally got my tracking number after being told to call Stern directly by my distributor. My game was to arrive on December the 12th! The time drew closer and I hadn’t heard from Estes Express, the shipping company, until the morning of the 12th. I followed the game over the weekend noticing that it arrived in Richmond on Sunday the 11th, I knew I would have my game soon! Alas it wasn’t to be, I was told that the earliest I could get my game would be on the 13th. Whats one more day right? YES, an ETERNITY! The 13th arrived and I waited for the call. I was off that day so it made it that much harder to wait. Eventually I got a call from the shipping company at 4:00pm with a delivery window, my game would arrive between 4:30 and 5:20pm! YAY!

I kept myself busy for a while and 5:20pm came with no truck in sight. I called Estes and was quickly put on hold for a minute then the operator came back and said “I have heard about that shipment, let me get with the driver and get him to call you.” Time to wait again. By this time it was getting dark. I was hoping the game would arrive in the daylight so I could inspect the box for damage but at this point I just wanted my game. Finally the truck driver called me at 6:30pm stating he was lost and Mapquest wasn’t giving him accurate directions. After a few minutes of explaining how to get to my house he was on his way. 6:45pm the truck rolls up with my game! It appeared that my game was the last delivery of the day; the truck trailer appeared empty minus a pallet of laser printers and my game all the way in the back.

Now keep in mind I paid an extra $25 so that Stern would pallet the game to protect from forklift damage and boy am I glad I paid for the pallet. As the driver wheeled the game closer to me I noticed that the box appeared to be bashed in. Oh no was all I could think but I held in my anxiety and waited until it was closer. The box wasn’t ripped but the bottom of the box was most definitely bashed in. Whenever you receive an item like this from a freight company it is imperative that you inspect the contents for damage before signing off. If you don’t the shipping company will argue that they didn’t damage the game and refuse to pay any insurance claims. I wheeled the game into my basement’s unfinished area so that I could visually inspect the game for damage. It just barely made it in, I didn’t know the box would be as wide as it was! I was hoping to leave the game in the box so that when my friends arrived we could open it together but that was no longer a possibility. Luckily after cutting the top of the box the game was not damaged! Crisis averted.

I left the game partially in the box until my friends arrived and we setup the game for the first time. Buying a brand new game is an awesome experience, one I hope to have again someday in the future. Overall I am very happy with my game, everything works, the cabinet isn’t all bashed up and the playfield is in great shape with no printing issues or clearcoat problems. I knew going in that the software would not be complete and that is fine, I know Stern will update it over time. The biggest positive of all is it is fun to play! Stern has placed sound bytes from the old cartoons in many places in the code which is a huge positive for me. Enough talking, here are pictures of my game!

I received number 194 out of 500 Limited Edition Transformers pinball machines. I am very glad I opted for this version. The special edition LEs are Autobot or Decepticon themed games. The Autobot edition has both sides of the cabinet covered in Autobot art and the Decepticon edition covered in Decepticon art. They also had faction specific translites, a signature from the designer George Gomez and a metal plated supposedly signed by each Faction’s leader in Cybertronian text. Transformers is about both factions so for that reason alone I opted for what Stern calls the Combo LE. It looks the best too, check out these promotional pictures from Stern:

Stern did an excellent job with the basecoat/clearcoat paint applied to the lockdown bar, side rails and legs. The Autobot side features a candy metallic red color and the Decepticon looks spectacular with the dark purple trim. I love the color combination. On the lockdown bar the two colors meet and that union is covered with a huge “TF” decal. Apparently this was provided by Hasbro as they would not allow a split Autobot/Decepticon insignia instead. Its a shame really but who knows someone in the aftermarket may provide a replacement! Mods are a huge part of pinball nowadays so I would not be surprised to see something come up in the years to come.

So I now have my first NIB game and I am overall very happy. Now I want to expand on what I said earlier about being *mostly* satisfied with my purchase. I had two issues that that warrant explanation; one with the buying experience and another with the product I received.

First regarding the buying experience. To put it bluntly I was not happy with the distributor I chose and how they reacted to my inquiries regarding my game as the delivery date neared. I won’t go into great detail here but I have learned who not to deal with in the future if that says anything. If any distributors happen upon this post please remember that customer service is extremely important. Stern is also partly to blame as well. They need to look closely at how they sell their machines, they still do not acknowledge that a lot of people buy these to put right into their personal collections. With only 500 limited edition games being produced I would bet most of these go to collectors.

The second issue was with the quality of the game itself, specifically the cabinet art and application of the cabinet decals. This is Stern’s first foray into cabinet decals and it shows. Although the majority of the cabinet looks nice there are many areas in which they could approve. In the past Stern cabinets were screen printed. The majority of pinball machines from the 1990s up until this game were screen printed with the exception of a few games like Monster Bash and Cactus Canyon to name a few, which both used cabinet decals for the majority of their runs. When Stern decided to go the decal route their offering differentiates from the Bally/Williams games I mentioned earlier in many ways. First, the decal material Stern uses is much thinner material. Some people have already reported tearing of the decals at the point where the cabinet legs attach. The art itself does look pretty nice overall but there are areas where certain characters in the image were sampled from lower resolution images as they tend to be blurry compared to other objects in the art. Based on my years of experience with Photoshop and web design I would say a lower resolution image was used and then stretched to make it fit the cabinet which anytime you upscale an image from a lower quality sample you will always get blurriness in the image. I have recently confirmed Stern does upscale digital images since this same issue appears with the image they used for Megatron in the translite.

The art quality issue really is a digital art 101 lesson (you should never upscale art, only downscale). The biggest issue of all in my eyes is the cutouts Stern has employed in the decal itself. As you can see in the picture below the areas where the shooter, start button and tournament button appear on the cabinet have huge cutouts. The start button and tournament button areas are not the worst offenders though, that title goes to the shooter cutout area. It is much larger than the shooter housing itself. When you take a close look you can see the underlying black cabinet.

Click for a larger picture

I contacted Stern prior to the release of the game and I was told this area is cutout larger on purpose so that when the shooter is installed it will not touch the decal. During the final assembly of the game the line workers will align the shooter housing and Stern feared it would tear the decal during the alignment process. This is an interesting position because the games I mentioned previously, Monster Bash and Cactus Canyon did not have this issue. Their decals were installed so that the shooter housing was directly on top of the cabinet decal. My opinion is Stern was worried about this because of the quality of the decal itself. Either that or they do not trust their line workers to assemble the games without damaging them. Either way it is a lack of quality that didn’t exist when Stern screen printed their cabinets.

Another issue with the cabinet decals is how they wrapped them around the edges of the cabinet on top of each other. First let me show you the back of the machine:

Decal is wrapped around the back of the cabinet.

You can see the decal wrapped around the back of the game. The decal is also wrapped around the front of the game and when the front decal is applied it is installed on top of the wrapped over decal. This creates a bulge underneath the front decal and is noticeable upon close inspection. Will I be staring at the cabinet constantly? No. Is it an issue that could have been avoided? YES. Line workers install Stern’s cabinet decals and in order to avoid the overlap they would have to cut the decals. I can see this being a situation where Stern wouldn’t want this line workers cutting decals because it requires a high level of skill and most important of all it takes more time. I won’t kid myself, Stern is in the business to make money not to create collector quality machines.

The ultimate question is: Does this damper my enthusiasm about the game? I can safely say no, it doesn’t, I am still happy with the game overall. The side effect of these issues ultimately will stop me from buying another new game from Stern until they have changed their manufacturing process. I suspect I am not the only one that feels this way.

To end on a more positive note I am enjoying playing this game. It is a ton of fun, is very fast and will only get better with time. I have already started making modifications to my game and I have also been putting up gameplay videos in my YouTube Channel. Watch for them!

Whoa, that was a TON of work but it is finally finished! I knew I had to get my gameroom in shape before my upcoming delivery of a brand new pin, but I don’t think I realized how much work would be involved in the process. Really old low pile carpet covered the floors and boring white paint adorned the walls, needless to say my gameroom wasn’t very inspiring.

My Old Basement Gameroom

One of the biggest issues was my gameroom didn’t feel like it had its own “identity”. The other side of the room housed my TV and console systems and with nothing separating the two sections the whole area felt like one huge mess. My wife and I decided that putting up a pony wall between the two sections would be the best way to give some separation while at the same time not closing in either of the spaces with a full height wall.

The pony wall is up.

I had a good friend come by and help me out with the pony wall construction. In actuality he put up the wall and about all I did to help was get materials and put up drywall. What can I say, I wanted to help but when you have a friend in construction its easier just to let him go at it and not get in the way!

Drywall installed.

See all of that brown carpet? All of that had to come up to make way for our new laminate flooring. Since this is a basement I couldn’t install hardwood. Carpet wasn’t an option as well so we opted for laminate flooring. We had no idea what we are getting ourselves into but we knew we had our work cut out for us. Our basement is not one huge box; we have a closet, a little tiny boxed in area in the corner of the room and the new pony wall that had to get flooring. Our first step was to remove the carpet and start laying down the underlayment.

Underlayment down and carpet removed.

See the closet with our A/C unit to the left in the picture above? That is one of the obstacles we had to plan for. Here is another one:

Since we were laying the laminate down on this side of the room first, this little area had to be done before anything else. We had to measure the depth of the laminate and it had to just meet the edge of the wall so that the long run of laminate would hook into this little corner. It seemed daunting at first but thanks to my wife’s careful planning and attention to detail we successfully navigated the first challenge.

Success!!

Those little black wedges you see in the picture above are spacers that were used to keep an expansion gap around the flooring. This is a floating floor so we had to leave at least a 1/4″ gap all the way around. We also had to make sure that our laminate would go under the door casings so that meant a lot of cutting with an undercut saw. Since the door casings would not be covered with quarter round we had to measure the planks to that they fit under perfectly. We had a transition piece that would go from the laminate to the exposed concrete floor in my workshop area so the laminate had to be just the right length.

Here is how we ran the laminate under the door casing

After getting it under the door casing we were able to run a lot more of the flooring until we got to our next obstacle, the closet doors. Here is our first attempt with the laminate:

The problem with laying it this way is our closet doors would not cover the laminate. We knew we would have to move the closet doors forward but after this first attempt we knew the doors wouldn’t cover the flooring. I also didn’t want to see the transition piece so we knew we had to backtrack and tackle this area again. I re-cut more laminate and did it again and this time ended up with satisfactory results:

Success!

Now the laminate is in the middle of the door casing. Once I installed the transition piece there would be a smooth transition with no view of the vinyl floor inside the closet. Now that we successfully navigated this obstacle we were ready for the next one, the new pony wall. We had to wrap the laminate around the column with the proper gap around the entire pony wall. After accomplishing what we thought was impossible previously we made short work and got it right the first try.

Let's just pretend you didn't see this...

The gap in the picture above is a bit bigger than we planned for but the quarter round would cover it with space to spare:

Gap? What gap!

After getting past the pony wall the rest was pretty easy. The only remaining obstacle was the steps leading up and out of the basement. We removed the old, dingy carpet that was there and decided to install laminate on the stairs as well. The risers (the vertical piece of wood) was not in the best of shape so we cut new ones and installed on top of the old. Since we were doing every stair this was an appropriate installation method but before we could install the new risers we had to cut the treads (the horizontal piece of wood that you step on) even with the existing risers. This was an interesting task. The professionals take a circular saw and after marking the tread they proceed with a plunge cut to remove the excess tread material. Since the circular saw is my least favorite power tool I went with a messy but easier way.

I bought a 1.5″ straight router bit (with a bearing) and cut the wood away manually. There were two downsides to this method. First it was a lot of work, each tread had to be trimmed. The second but most important issue is all of the mess it would make! I didn’t think of that before I already started cutting and it left tons of wood dust under the stairs which got all over everything packed up down there. Oh well a small price to pay for safety from my arch enemy the circular saw.

The new risers installed.

The completed staircase from above. What a beauty!

Now we have a separate area for the arcade and the TV/MOVIE/Video Game recreation area. This is probably the most rewarding project we have accomplished. Not only did we do the installation ourselves, we also proved that we could handle a huge project with minimal mistakes. It makes the gameroom a place the entire family wants to be. I haven’t started putting up posters and pictures yet except for my Dragon’s Lair poster but that will be the next step in the evolution of our basement gameroom. Here are a few more shots of the finished area:

I bought this project with the sole intent of cleaning it up and selling it. Joust is not a game that wanted as a long term keeper but this particular example turned out to be a great way for me to learn how to paint with an HVLP gun.

The cleanup was a chore and somewhere during the rebuild I decided to repaint the front of the cabinet. It didn’t desperately need to be repainted but it did have a hole cut in the front of the game where the power switch was relocated and some wood issues at the bottom.

I ended up filling the hole with a wood dowel and sanded the entire front of the cabinet to wood:

I had a few issues with spraying oil base paint through the HVLP gun the most significant being fish eyes. I ended up sanding the front of the cabinet down 4 times before I finally figured out what I was doing wrong, I was applying too much paint. There is a paint flow adjustment at the back of the HVLP gun that was set too high and once I adjusted that properly the front of the game came out like this:

I didn’t want to spray the paint too thick so you can see some of the wood grain in the picture above. It came out very smooth Iwanted it to come out smoother but the paint I used said to only thin 5% so I didn’t thin the paint. Next time I will experiment a bit more.

In the end I did the following to this game:

Moved the power switch back to the top rear of the cabinet

Filled the hole in the front of the cabinet and repainted

Recapped the monitor

Replaced all capacitors on the circuit boards and replaced the battery holder

Installed new joystick (sticks only)

Cleaned the game

Installed a new ballast, starter and light bulb for the marquee light

Touched up the sides of the cabinet

Here are pictures of the completed game:

I finally got my hands on a Creature from the Black Lagoon! I have always wanted one of these, it is a beautiful game and after spending a few weeks with it I love the gameplay. So what is this hitch I am referring to? It’s already sold. What???? I sold another game before having it for a month? It can’t be possible! Anyone that knows me knows that I tend to sell games quickly that I don’t like, but what was wrong with Creature? Nothing actually, I sold this about a month ago to preorder my first brand new pinball machine! See the next post for what I decided to purchase, in the meantime here are some pictures of the Creature I sold:

A friend of the owner of the Indiana Jones pinball I shopped out at the beginning of this year wanted to get his pin shopped out as well, and after agreeing to the terms he dropped off the game in May. I started the shop job on June the first and I just finished it up last week. The owner came by and picked it up this weekend and I think it turned out really nice!

Pictures: http://gallery.metahugh.com/main.php?g2_itemId=26371

Unfortunately the game developed an issue with the “car crunch” flipper, a flipper that is under the playfield which hits a ball against a plastic car to simulate the destroying the car scene which appeared in SF2 as a bonus minigame. It appeared to be an issue with the coil itself which I didn’t have on hand to replace.

Looking past that issue the game turned out great. It was deceivingly dirty under all of those ramps and plastics and it took a bit of time to tear it down and rebuild it. It took my longer than normal to get this one done and it didn’t help that I didn’t have a deadline that I needed to adhere to so the process dragged on longer than necessary. All in all I think I spent around 30 hours rebuilding the game.

This is the last shop job I do for someone else. It has absolutely nothing to do with the owner of the game, he is a super cool guy, its the fact that I have so many of my own projects to do and I find that with a project like this I need to finish it prior to working on my own games. The other side to shopping out a game for another person is if a problem develops that is outside of your control (i.e. the Car Crunch flipper problem) I feel guilty that I have to give the game back not 100%. That said I can’t see myself doing another shop job for another person anytime soon. Now when my other project machines are complete I might reassess my thoughts.
